My Topic:
All around the world High Fructose Syrup is becoming a big deal, from health concerns, the cost associated with it and even bans that have surfaced. So many people have been trying sincerely to rid the world of this sweetener, while others fight for its positive cost affects for their business. Is high fructose corn syrup good for our current world? Do the health affects outweigh the cost benefits, or vice versa? This is why this topic appealed to me. The back and forward controversy of High fructose corn syrup is not only something that affects the world but my own family and its time we try and hit both sides a bit.
A Place to Start:
I decided that I felt something a little more should be done. I decided that the best way to get a start is to write a letter to the The Cheesecake Factory. My father came home one day upset that he couldn't eat any of his favorite treats because of his allergy to high fructose corn syrup. He was upset that a place considered "gourmet" is using cheap sweetener that you could get in any cheesecake of a similar size. It's a good bet we are just paying for the name. This gave me a little hope with a big idea. What If I sent a letter to The Cheesecake Factory about making a line of pure sugar cheesecake? Its a small start, they won't need to get rid of what they have but they could open up to a new demographic and use there big name to get the movement going.
Other Choices:
I had so many other choices I could have used. Any food with High Fructose Corn Syrup in it would have worked for this. Some others include Kellogg's, Oreo, Capri-Sun, Tropicana, Sarah Lee, Lifesavers, Heinz, Nutri-Grain, Cool Whip, Ben and Jerry's, Ect. These aren't even a start of those using high fructose corn syrup and I'm sure most of you know that. That brings up the question though. What percent of the food in our world doesn't have high fructose corn syrup in it and those that don't, how does that affect their cost?
Getting Involved:
Write a letter! That is a strong way to start. You can use any of the places from above or think of some you know. Some businesses already have real sugar versions of their food out and it seems to be going well so why can't all these other places? it shouldn't be this hard to find food with high fructose corn syrup in it.
The Class Behind the Idea:
This entire endeavor was involved by my College English course. This means tons of other students are putting out their ideas and want you to get involved. If you would like to see some of these blogs click here!
